Fabric Dyes and Fabric Manipulations

Fabric Dyes and Fabric Manipulations *
Fabric dying and manipulations are a central part of my design process. Over the past three years, I have experimented with a variety of fabric techniques, including natural dyeing, screen printing, shibori, and batik.
The evolution of my prints began with exploring textiles dyed using the heat sublimation process. While this process produces bold, saturated colours, it is limited to synthetic fabrics. To achieve similar vibrancy on natural fabrics, I spent approximately eight weeks experimenting with different dyeing techniques and processes in the textile studio.
Ultimately, I developed a process that captured the colours, prints, and movement I wanted for my collection. This method involves hand-painting with synthetic dyes, blow-drying, and setting the colour using algae.
Leftover prints or pieces that were considered unsuccessful were repurposed to create textural woven fabrics. These pieces can be seen in the layered, woven garments throughout the collection.
